To address the problem of water seepage in fishponds, most fishponds now use geomembranes, which have proven highly effective. Fishpond geomembranes are made from high-density polyethylene granules, also known as HDPE membranes, and are plastic geomembranes produced through processes such as hot-melt and stretching.

Geomembrane thickness typically ranges from 0.3 to 2.0 mm. However, fishpond geomembranes don't need to be too thick; 0.3-1.0 mm is sufficient depending on the specific needs. Generally, for water depths below 3 meters, where water pressure has minimal impact on the membrane, a 0.3-0.5 mm thickness is adequate. For water depths above 3 meters, a thickness of 0.5-1.0 mm is recommended. When used specifically for shrimp and crab ponds, a slightly thicker membrane, such as 0.5-1.0 mm, should be chosen to prevent damage from sharp claws or shells of organisms.
The standards for geomembrane materials vary widely. Fishpond geomembranes have relatively high requirements for raw materials. When selecting materials, it is essential to choose brand-new, high-quality materials that will not harm aquatic life. Never choose inferior materials to save money, as these materials may have an odor that negatively impacts aquatic animal growth.
When the fishpond surface is uneven, directly laying the geomembrane could easily puncture or tear it. Laying a layer of non-woven geotextile before the geomembrane reduces the possibility of damage. In areas with soft soil, laying a layer of geotextile at the bottom can also provide reinforcement and protection, effectively preventing slope collapse in the fishpond.
The geomembrane covering system for aquaculture ponds is primarily used for the construction of elevated aquaculture ponds and the renovation of earthen ponds. The HDPE geomembrane specifically designed for aquaculture has high tensile strength, impact resistance, tear resistance, and hydrostatic pressure resistance. It also has good performance in acid and alkali corrosion resistance, microbial corrosion resistance, and seepage prevention, allowing the pond bottom to be completely separated from the pond water. Because the surface of the aquaculture geomembrane is smooth, it is not only convenient for disinfection and dredging, but also helps to prevent the transmission of pathogens from the bottom.
